참꽃나무 Rhododendron weyrichii

 

수세가 강건하고 진달래나 철쭉에 비해 높게 자라며, 꽃이 크고 색깔이 선명한 진홍색이고 암술대에 털이나 돌기가 없는 점이 특징이다.

 

제주도 한라산 산기슭이나 숲 가장자리, 사면 바위지대 등에서 자란다. 일본에도 분포한다.

● 참꽃나무 Rhododendron weyrichii | weyrich's azalea  ↘  목련강 진달래목 진달래과 진달래속 관목-소교목 

높이는 3~6m 정도이다. 나무껍질은 연한 갈색 또는 붉은빛이 도는 갈색이며, 어릴 때는 매끈하지만 오래되면 세로로 얇게 갈라진다. 잎은 가지 끝에서 2~3장씩 모여나며 넓은 난형 또는 마름모꼴 원형으로 길이 3.5~8cm, 폭 2.5~6cm이다.

꽃은 5월에 잎과 동시에 피며, 2~5개씩 달리며, 선명한 주홍색이고 길이 5~6cm 정도이다. 꽃자루, 꽃받침에 갈색 털이 많다. 수술은 10개, 암술은 1개다. 갈색 털이 밀생하는 열매는 삭과이며 난형이고, 9~10월에 익는다. .<국립생물자원관 한반도의생물다양성>

• 털참꽃나무 : 암술대의 기부에 긴 갈색털이 있으며 한라산에서 자란다.

• 한라산참꽃나무(R. saisulense) : 가지에는 2~3개의 가시가 있다. 꽃은 분홍색. 제주도 한라산에 분포하는 한국 고유종.

• 흰참꽃나무(R. sohayakiense var. koreanum) : 가지 끝에 2-6개씩 달리며 흰 꽃이 핀다. 가야산, 덕유산, 지리산 고산지대.
