1열로 배열된 종자마다 감싸고 있는 열매가 잘록하게 들어가 염주 모양을 이루고 있어 염주괴불주머니라고 한다. 우리나라 중부 이남 주로 남부지역 바닷가나 서해 섬 지역에 분포한다고 하는데, 내륙지역에서도 종종 발견된다. 자르면 역한 냄새가 난다.
갯괴불주머니(C. platycarpa)와 모양이 비슷하여 구별이 쉽지 않은데, 갯괴불주머니는 종자가 2줄로 배열되기 때문에 열매가 넓고 편평해 보이는 것으로 구별된다. 갯괴불주머니는 울릉도와 제주도에 제한적으로 분포한다.

5월 초순 이른 시기지만 염주 모양으로 잘록한 열매가 달려 있는 것이 보인다.
● 염주괴불주머니 Corydalis heterocarpa ↘ 양귀비목 현호색과 현호색속의 두해살이풀
줄기는 곧게 자라며 가치를 치고, 높이 40-60cm이다. 전체에 털이 없다. 잎은 어긋나며, 2회 깃꼴겹잎이다. 작은잎은 쐐기 모양으로 끝은 뾰족하고 가장자리는 깊게 갈라졌다.
꽃은 4-5월에 피며 줄기와 가지 끝에서 총상꽃차례에 달리며 노란색이다. 포는 피침형이다. 꽃잎의 한쪽은 입술 모양이며, 다른 한쪽은 짧게 휘어 있다. 수술은 6개, 2갈래로 갈라진다. 열매는 삭과, 이어달린 염주 모양으로 끝은 가늘고 뾰족하다. 씨는 검은색, 1줄로 배열한다.
