큰극락조화(남극락조화, Strelitza nicolai)

 
꽃이 극락조의 머리와 닮은 파초과의 극락조화는 스트렐리치아속인데, 이에 속한 식물은 모두 남아프리카 원산으로 5종이 있다. 이 가운데서 흔히 재배하는 종이 극락조화(Strelitzia reginae)인데, 그 외에도 Strelitzia augusta(흰 극락조화), Strelitzia caudata(사막 극락조화), Strelitzia nicolai(큰 극락조화), Strelitzia juncea(좁은잎 극락조화) 등이 있다.

 

그 중 큰극락조화는 흰 꽃이 피는 대형종으로 눈길을 끈다. 어린이대공원에서는 큰극락조화를 '남극락조화(Strelitza nicolaii)'라는 다른 이름으로 표기하고 있다. 학명은 'Strelitza nicolai'으로 표기해 놓은 게 일반적인데, 그 연유는 알 수 없지만 러시아의 짜르 니콜라이를 기념해서 붙인 이름이라 한다.

남극락조화 Strelitza nicolai | Giant White Bird of Paradise

파초과의 여러해살이풀

 

극락조화들 중에서 가장 큰 종으로 키가 6m에 이르며 목질의 곧은 줄기를 가진 바나나를 닮은 식물이다. '큰흰극락조화' 또는 '야생바나나'라고도 불린다. 2m쯤 되는 커다란 잎은 회록색이며 여인초처럼 부채처럼 배열되고 있다. 꽃차례가 쌍을 이루고 흰색의 꽃받침조각이 검푸른 포에 받쳐져 있다.

 

Strelitzia nicolai, commonly known as the Giant White Bird of Paradise or Wild Banana are banana-like plants with erect woody stems reaching a height of 6 m (20 ft) and the clumps formed can spread as far as 3.5 m (12 ft).

 

The 1.8 m (6 ft) long leaves are grey-green and arranged like a fan at the top of the stems, similar to Ravenala madagascariensis. The inflorescence is composed of a dark blue bract, white sepals and a bluish-purple "tongue". The entire flower can be as much as 18 cm high by 45 cm long and is typically held just above the point where the leaf fan emerges from the stem.
