노랑새우풀=파키스타키스(Pachystachys lutea)

 

노랑새우풀이란 이름은 영명 Golden Shrimp Plant에서 나온 것이다. Lollipop Plant라고도 한다. 멕시코, 페루 원산으로 쥐꼬리망초과(Acanthaceae)의 늘푸른 이열대 소관목이다. 새우풀=벨로페로네의 변종이다.

노란색 포가 강렬하여 마치 꽃처럼 여겨지는데 그래서 이름도 노랑새우풀이 되었다. 하지만 진짜 꽃은 흰색으로 피는데 포와 포 사이에서 혀처럼 띄엄띄엄 내밀고 있는데 꽃으로서는 눈에 잘 띄지 않는 모습이다. (The actual flower is white, surrounded by the showy yellow bracts, in 4 inches long terminal spikes.)

'파키스타키스'라는 이름은 '크다'는 뜻을 가진 그리스어 Pachys와 '이삭'이라는 뜻을 가진 stachys의 합성어로 커다란 이삭 꽃차례를 지닌 꽃의 특성을 잘 나타내고 있다.

높이 90∼120cm 정도 자라고 잎은 마주난다. 여름에 가지 끝에서 수상(이삭모양) 꽃차례가 달리는데, 황금빛 노란색 포가 화려하며 포와 포 사이에 흰 꽃잎이 혀처럼 나온다.

 

햇볕이 충분한 곳에서 잘 자라며 줄기를 꺾꽂이하여 번식한다. 주로 실내 화분용 기르며 약용으로도 경작된다.
